Can I sail on the IJsselmeer without a licence?

Friesland is a water-rich province. Not only can you enjoy fantastic water sports on all Frisian lakes and inland waterways. The province also borders the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer. The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands and a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. In the dozens of Frisian marinas on the IJsselmeer you can rent a motor or sailing boat. You will enjoy all the peace and quiet on the former Zuiderzee, because only on nice days in the summer can it sometimes be busy on the Stavoren-Enkhuizen sailing route.

Boating license required on the IJsselmeer

If you want to sail on the IJsselmeer, you must be in possession of a boating license 2. This boating license is mandatory for sailing on a personal watercraft, jet ski, dinghy or motorboat that can go faster than 20 km/h at full throttle and for boats with a length of more than 15 meters. And remember; Even a dinghy with a 5 hp outdoor drill motor can easily sail 20 km/hour!

High fines for sailing without a license

If you are checked by the water police and you do not have a boating licence 2, you risk a fine of no less than €500. Even if you were sailing less than 20 km/h at that time. Moreover, without a license you are not insured in a boat that is too fast or too big.

Pay attention to the wind

The pleasant IJsselmeer can turn into a treacherous sailing area with wind force 5 or more. Due to the relatively shallow water, short, high waves occur when the wind blows. Make sure you always have enough fuel on board and look for the first harbour as soon as white foam heads appear on the water.

We wish you a lot of fun on the IJsselmeer during your holiday in Friesland !
